U.S. Gold $20 Liberty 1890-1903

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2510
1890-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55 PQ. Undipped satiny surfaces with deep yellow gold. A touch of reflectivity is noted in the fields. The expected abrasions for a Carson City double eagle are found scattered about and several heavier reed marks exist on reverse. A relatively plentiful issue up to the mid-AU levels but rare in correctly graded mint state. Small pricing spreads between AU55 and AU58 levels allow for the existence of many choice AU-55 coins, this being one of them. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder. PCGS population of 174 in AU-55 (PCGS # 9014) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.

High Grade 1891-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. Strongly reflective fields with crisp radial luster contrast a frosty and near gem device. Original luster can still be seen rolling across Liberty's cheek. A thin, shallow hairline scratch is seen in the top of the hair. Stars 1-4 display weakness. Reverse detail is of uncirculated quality and there is no wear of any significance on the eagle. The 1891-CC is a scarce date in all grades and the present piece is one of the finer examples that this cataloguer has seen in recent times. A scant mintage of only 5,000 from Carson City this year and obviously a key date from this series. PCGS has graded 16 in AU-58 with only 16 finer, the finest being a single MS-63 example (PCGS # 9017) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

1892 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. A very rare date from the Type III Liberty Head double eagle series. Philadelphia produced only 4,410 double eagle in 1892 and choice survivors are very scarce. This specimen has the eye appeal that every collector and/or dealer wants a choice AU 1892 double eagle to possess! Completely fresh with flashy light yellow gold fields graced by mint state luster. Only the faintest hairlines are in the fields. The top of Liberty's hair shows no friction nor does the tips of the eagles wings. Semi-reflective fields add to the eye appeal of this low mintage double eagle rarity. Very rare in mint state and we feel that this specimen should easily achieve mint state status. PCGS has graded only 13 in AU58 with 25 finer Housed in an older PCGS green label, fat letter holder (PCGS # 9019) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Lot 2520
Splendid 1892-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. A delightful example of this scarce and popular Carson City double eagle that had a mintage of only 27,265. While any example use to be tough to find in the higher AU and MS grades, a hoard that has been dispersed has made mint state specimens from MS-60 - MS-62 available for the right price. The present piece is unquestionably mint state in condition and very pleasing for the assigned grade. Original surfaces that possess rich radial luster and intact mint frost. The obverse fields have the slightest amount of reflectivity to them and are notably mark free. The only two obverse marks to mention are a short scratch just to the right of star 2 and a small scuff near the rim, left of star 4. This pleasing example is very close to the finest known as PCGS has graded 39 in MS-62 with only 4 in MS-63 as the finest known (PCGS # 9020) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,500.

Lot 2528
1893-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. The 1893 Carson City double eagle is the most available double eagle issue from that mint in uncirculated condition. It can be found with relative ease all the way up to the MS-62 grade but keep in mind that finding choice specimens can be a challenge. Many "sliders" end up in mint state holders and the quality conscious collector can find this frustrating. In Mint State 63, the 1893-CC becomes a serious condition rarity. Viewers of the present offering will agree that this specimen is correctly graded as MS63 and is many steps above "product" MS-61-62 coins. The surfaces are rich yellow gold, frosty and unabraded. Shimmering luster is found across Liberty's cheek and the feathers of the eagle. Anyone appreciating original gold will rejoice when observing the pristine nature of this specimen. No hairlines are found in the fields and the original skin of the coin in intact. While the 1893-CC may be a "type" candidate for a Type III Carson City double eagle, do not let that fool you into thinking that the present coin is anything other than rare! Population 17 with none higher by PCGS (PCGS # 9023) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.

1893-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. Light golden coloration on surfaces that are satiny and fresh. A beautiful uncirculated specimen that has never been dipped or had its originality removed in any fashion. When tilting this coin at an angle in proper lighting the true uncirculated condition of this piece pops out at the viewer. An extremely light hairline scratch is in the center of the cheek but is only seen at certain angles. A very light die crack starts at the rims just left of O of OF and continues through the mid-section of AMERICA. Another slight die crack starts left of U of UNITED and continues through to the E. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder. PCGS population is 59 in MS-61, 102 in MS-62 and 15 in MS-63 as finest (PCGS # 9023) .

1902 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. A beautiful and entirely original example of this better date Type III double eagle. Rich yellow gold surfaces are matched on the obverse and reverse. The fields and devices are much finer in quality than the assigned grade of MS61. Only the faintest of hairlines can be observed in the fields. There are three better date double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint from the early 20th century, the 1902, 1905 and 1906. Of these three, the 1902 and 1905 are the scarcest. A small mintage of 31,140 was all that was produced in 1902 and survivors rarely make it past the MS63 grade. We feel certain that bidding will be intense for this original, choice and undervalued double eagle scarcity. Housed in an old PCGS green label, fat letter holder (PCGS # 9041) .
